New Media Art musings at the New School

Introductions

Hi, all! Welcome to the blog for the New Media Art class at the New School. We’ll be looking at digital media and its role in contemporary artistic creation, bridging the discourse between art and computer science.
Please introduce yourself by adding a comment below and let the networking begin… ~Josephine

  1. Hi, all. I’m Josephine, your instructor, and here’s a bit about me.
The short version: I’m a media artist, director, performer and educator. I like to dance and make noise and pictures and it’s especially cool when I can make them with electricity and numbers, and then send them over the ether. I also like to jump out of planes.

    The long version:
Josephine Dorado is a New York-based media artist, performer and educator. In her work, she explores the extension of the performance environment with technology, often utilizing movement-based, sensor-driven synthesis and networked telepresence. She initiated and co-directs the Kids Connect program, which connects youth internationally via media art, performance and streaming technology within the virtual world Second Life. Josephine was also involved in the United Nations forum “Our Common Humanity in the Information Age,” directing the webcasts and virtual fora as well as coordinating their workshops on media and the Millennium Development Goals. Josephine received her M.A. in Media Studies at the New School. She was a Fulbright scholarship recipient and an artist-in-residence at Waag Society for Old and New Media in Amsterdam, wherein she presented several networked performances involving international collaborations. She has also written, choreographed and performed several plays and one-woman shows, which were performed at various venues in New York and Florida. Productions include a performance of RPM’s Remixed for the ZeroOne | ISEA Festival as well as an invitation to speak at SIGGRAPH in the Educators Forum. Josephine is also a technical trainer and consultant, and her clients include Banc of America Securities, HSBC and Goldman Sachs. She currently teaches at the New School, continues to direct the Kids Connect program and is also involved in several networked mixed reality projects involving dance theater, motion capture analysis, and Second Life performance. Her experience ranging from theater for at-risk children to technology and multimedia design, brings perspectives on theater-inspired collaborative methodologies as well as the issues of working within a virtual and networked context.

    Nice to meet everyone!

  2. Hi,
I’m Tyler. I am currently finishing my BA at the New School (last semester). I began my university education at Reed in Portland as a music major, but halfway through wanted to broaden my mind a bit and moved to Berlin for two years or so. I discovered contemporary art, (more variations of) abstract sound, sound art, culturally oriented theoretical discourse, new media art and europhilia. For some reason which I still haven’t figured out, I decided to return last spring to the US to finish my BA, in New York though, because the thought of return to a small homogenous city and college didn’t jive so well with my interests. Although I have been largely a flaneur for the past four years or so, I have been working on some overly ambitious sound projects, whose incompletion is either a testament to my own capacity to be distracted, the immensity of the ideas or both. At the new school I am focusing on humanities (modern literature, philosophy/theory, art) and am hoping to go to graduate school somewhere across the pond within the next year and a half.

  3. Greetings Earthlings,

This is Rai (rhymes w/ why) reaching out. I was born in Caracas, Venezuela to a Russian-Yugoslavian father & a Venezuelan mother & am the eldest of 3 crazy sisters.

I feel like a bowl of scrambled eggs when it comes to my education. I returned to school as an “adult” student in the BA Program & have found it to be one of the biggest challenges & blessing of my LIFE. On one hand I feel I have a lot to offer with my Jack-Of-All-Trades background: modeling, acting, tour managing a punk rock band, working in hospitality, writing and now (working part-X)in a fashion design studio, and on the other hand, I really to need to focus and concentrate my skills in order to figure out how I can better this wild wild world we dwell in. I guess I feel a bit all over the place.

I love people & stories. The insane thing about us human beings, isn’t our DIFFERENCES but our SIMILARITIES! We are all connected…if we allow ourselves to be.

I am looking forward to learning some fabulous new things in this class and adding some new tools to my old tool box. Josephine, you are coming from such a foreign world to me with your new media & tech backgrounds…aaah, it feels super scary. I am scared to death but thrilled @ the possibilities of learning what you have to share w/ us & what we have to teach one another as well. In time, I hope to have picked up a bit of this new foreign language. I Shall Have No Fear!

    That’s All For Now Folks.

    -RAI

  4. Hello
It’s Lauren. So here’s some stuff:
I am almost finished with my BFA in photography, I’ve been working towards my degree for the past four years and its finally coming to a close. I’m more of a multimedia artist, photo is too confining in a way, – I like making things. Recently I’ve been struck into thought by the rapid technology based advancements that the developed world is constantly adopting and testing. This class is going to be the perfect outlet for all thoughts have been wanting to brainstorm about the digitized world and in what ways technology is affecting the present generations’ grasp of the world (ie. cyborg nation!) I’m a little bit of a conspiracy theorist when it comes to the machine.

I’m a Canadian that was rerouted to Zimbabwe by my crazy parents in 1992, then in 2000 we moved back to Canada. I suppose seeing that developing country when I was a growing up opened my eyes to all of the opportunity that technology allows.
I hope this class is going to really get down with some high level conversating, so lets get to it.

  5. Hello all,

This is Kaz. I don’t know where to start…uhh.. I was a competitive figure skater until 15 and then switched my focus to playing the cello. I attended Juilliard for my freshman year, transferred to the music program at the New School the next year, and now here I am, majoring in cultural and media studies. I plan to finish my degree here but I definitely want to do something with my playing some time in the future.

I took this course to 1) explore some of the visual arts field that I never got a chance to and 2) to familiarize myself with the capabilities of different and innovative media. Anything art always fascinates me and I am looking forward to our class.

..and a shout out to Rai for SIMILARITIES. Good call!

  6. What’s Good Mates:

This is Michael H., I am originally from the Motor City, good old Detroit, Michigan. I moved to New York to pursue a career in fashion, and entertainment. So far so good, I have worked as a Trainig Director for a French cosmectics company, Creative Director for an entertainment (music: Hip-Hop, R&B) based Public Relations firm, and as Merchandise Manager/Buyer for several high-end luxury companies. After many years of trying to decide and also finding time, I’ve made the “conscious” decision to further my education. As our society continues its vexation into technology. I felt it best that I gain further understanding of what has and is taking place and what new cultures are springing forth from this source (online identity, activism, photography, 2nd Life). As an observer of art and technology, I find their merger fascinating for example the short film project shown during our first session “Elephant’s Dream,” is truely marvelous, not only is it a strong and captivating art piece, but the technology that has brought this piece to life, along with the idea that this work was mastered as an on-going collabative effort (globally!)to say the least, is “pretty amazing”. What I also find p/a is Mashed/Remixed Art. Now, by no means am I a technical junkie; however, I have hopes this class will provide me with greater awarness of what’s current in New Media, what’s next on its’ horizon and the personal confidence to explore, be unafraid, learn and understand this mediums language, and practice using this new technology. Ohh, and by the way, my tag: “SoftSeduction” comes from the philosophy of the art of sedcution and how we gently pursuade folks into our sphere of thought.

    Peace,

    –m.

  7. Hello All,
It’s Sara. I’m a BA student at the New School. About three years ago I left my corporate life behind to finish my degree. My professional background WAS in finance and operations but most recently I entered the non-profit world. I’m the Director of a foundation that supports a long-term documentary film about the rebuilding at Ground Zero. The film, upon its completion, will be a permanent installation at the National September 11th Memorial Museum (the contract was signed recently, so I’m still on cloud nine!). My hopes in the future, once the film comes to an end, is to continue working with the Memorial Museum or other museums on film (or other)installation projects. I’ve taken a number of art history classes at the New School and they’ve all been great. I believe this class is going to be especially beneficial because of its relevance to the ‘now’ in the art & technology world.

On a personal note: I’ve been married for five years, my husband is also a New School graduate from the MA Media Studies program (the same program Josephine was in). We travel back to our homelands, his being Argentina and mine being San Francisco once or twice a year. Our dream is to live in Buenos Aires one day. We’ll see. I have two crazy cats; one has all this long hair and the other is totally hairless– they are quite a pair.

See you all later this week.

    Ciao,

    Sara

  8. Hey dudes-

    This is Amanda.

I grew up a traditional Connecticut Yankee but with a year here and there in Mexico, Canada, Spain, the Bahamas, and Ireland. I love to travel and do new things, but since I always have to have new experiences, my education thus far has left me tragically well-rounded. I’m ok at just about everything but have yet to become great at anything. I’m not really sure what I like or what my true calling is. As of this moment, I am a Junior Art History major at Hamilton College. I was supposed to be in Spain this semester, but stuff happens (hopefully for a reason) and I found myself in this crazy city instead.

In the famous words of Jesse on that infamous “Saved By the Bell” episode, “I’m so excited! I’m so excited! I’m so… scared!” I’m so excited to be taking this class because nothing like it is offered at Hamilton and I think the subject matter is both fascinating and relevant to the art world. I’m so scared because I don’t know anything about any of this stuff. But I guess that’s the point of taking a class. I’ll see you all tomorrow.

    One love,
    Amanda

  9. I’m Jonathan. Prior to coming here, I bounced around between inexplicable jobs (web design??) and schools (the Culinary Institute of America??). None of them were good ideas, but at least they’re amusing in retrospect. I’m not sure where I want to be in five years, but I’m optimistic. I live in New Jersey.

I’m taking classes in writing, psychology, art, etc… because I think they’re all essentially the same thing. And this is one of those classes that you don’t see very often. So here I am.

  10. Hi everyone, I’m Megan. It’s funny reading all of the introductions – it seems like one thing we all have in common is that we all have a lot of different (sometimes incongruous) interests. I’ve studied film, philosophy, audio engineering, I’ve tried my hand at rock stardom (unsuccessfully), and I have no idea what I’m doing next. I’m interested in everything, and you could say I’m an information junkie. If you ask me a question I can’t answer, I MUST LOOK IT UP IMMEDIATELY or I can’t stop thinking about it.

I think this class will be interesting because the nature of “new media art” is that it is still sort of undefined – we don’t really know what the boundaries are, or what can or can’t be done. The possibilities are endless.

  12. Hello, I’m Toby this is my last class to complete my BFA in photography. I’ve just finished applying to graduate schools for an MFA in photo and hope to be attending in the fall. Since leaving Parsons in 2002 I’ve worked as a Photo Editor and Producer for magazines and high-end fashion clients. Most recently I was the Photo Editor of Penthouse magazine relaunching the magazine with a different look and feel. While at Penthouse I started a photo based project of shooting porn stars behind the scenes and have continued that project. I am currently planning a big trip in FEB to LA to shoot again. I grew up in Soho, with stints in Italy and California mixed in. I’m excited about this class because although I am well versed in whats happening in the traditional art world I don’t know that much about web based art and I can see that really being the future.

  13. Hi everyone!! I’m Mariana. I am originally from Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. I am a US Resident and for the past few years I started taking part-time classes at the New School and Parsons. My interests are Art in general and it goes from the process of making art to the history of Art. This class title appeals to me. The subject is interesting and futuristic. I am looking forward learning more about the virtual world!
