Hi everyone!! I'm Mariana. I am originally from Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. I am a US Resident and for the past few years I started taking part-time classes at the New School and Parsons. My interests are Art in general and it goes from the process of making art to the history of Art. This class title appeals to me. The subject is interesting and futuristic. I am looking forward learning more about the virtual world!

Hello, I'm Toby this is my last class to complete my BFA in photography. I've just finished applying to graduate schools for an MFA in photo and hope to be attending in the fall. Since leaving Parsons in 2002 I've worked as a Photo Editor and Producer for magazines and high-end fashion clients. Most recently I was the Photo Editor of Penthouse magazine relaunching the magazine with a different look and feel. While at Penthouse I started a photo based project of shooting porn stars behind the scenes and have continued that project. I am currently planning a big trip in FEB to LA to shoot again. I grew up in Soho, with stints in Italy and California mixed in. I'm excited about this class because although I am well versed in whats happening in the traditional art world I don't know that much about web based art and I can see that really being the future.

Hi everyone, I'm Megan. It's funny reading all of the introductions - it seems like one thing we all have in common is that we all have a lot of different (sometimes incongruous) interests. I've studied film, philosophy, audio engineering, I've tried my hand at rock stardom (unsuccessfully), and I have no idea what I'm doing next. I'm interested in everything, and you could say I'm an information junkie. If you ask me a question I can't answer, I MUST LOOK IT UP IMMEDIATELY or I can't stop thinking about it.

I think this class will be interesting because the nature of "new media art" is that it is still sort of undefined - we don't really know what the boundaries are, or what can or can't be done. The possibilities are endless.

I'm Jonathan. Prior to coming here, I bounced around between inexplicable jobs (web design??) and schools (the Culinary Institute of America??). None of them were good ideas, but at least they're amusing in retrospect. I'm not sure where I want to be in five years, but I'm optimistic. I live in New Jersey.

I'm taking classes in writing, psychology, art, etc... because I think they're all essentially the same thing. And this is one of those classes that you don't see very often. So here I am.

Hey dudes-

This is Amanda.

I grew up a traditional Connecticut Yankee but with a year here and there in Mexico, Canada, Spain, the Bahamas, and Ireland. I love to travel and do new things, but since I always have to have new experiences, my education thus far has left me tragically well-rounded. I'm ok at just about everything but have yet to become great at anything. I'm not really sure what I like or what my true calling is. As of this moment, I am a Junior Art History major at Hamilton College. I was supposed to be in Spain this semester, but stuff happens (hopefully for a reason) and I found myself in this crazy city instead.

In the famous words of Jesse on that infamous "Saved By the Bell" episode, "I'm so excited! I'm so excited! I'm so... scared!" I'm so excited to be taking this class because nothing like it is offered at Hamilton and I think the subject matter is both fascinating and relevant to the art world. I'm so scared because I don't know anything about any of this stuff. But I guess that's the point of taking a class. I'll see you all tomorrow.

One love,
Amanda

Hello All,
It's Sara. I'm a BA student at the New School. About three years ago I left my corporate life behind to finish my degree. My professional background WAS in finance and operations but most recently I entered the non-profit world. I'm the Director of a foundation that supports a long-term documentary film about the rebuilding at Ground Zero. The film, upon its completion, will be a permanent installation at the National September 11th Memorial Museum (the contract was signed recently, so I'm still on cloud nine!). My hopes in the future, once the film comes to an end, is to continue working with the Memorial Museum or other museums on film (or other)installation projects. I've taken a number of art history classes at the New School and they've all been great. I believe this class is going to be especially beneficial because of its relevance to the 'now' in the art & technology world.

On a personal note: I've been married for five years, my husband is also a New School graduate from the MA Media Studies program (the same program Josephine was in). We travel back to our homelands, his being Argentina and mine being San Francisco once or twice a year. Our dream is to live in Buenos Aires one day. We'll see. I have two crazy cats; one has all this long hair and the other is totally hairless-- they are quite a pair.

See you all later this week.

Ciao,

Sara

What's Good Mates:

This is Michael H., I am originally from the Motor City, good old Detroit, Michigan. I moved to New York to pursue a career in fashion, and entertainment. So far so good, I have worked as a Trainig Director for a French cosmectics company, Creative Director for an entertainment (music: Hip-Hop, R&B) based Public Relations firm, and as Merchandise Manager/Buyer for several high-end luxury companies. After many years of trying to decide and also finding time, I've made the "conscious" decision to further my education. As our society continues its vexation into technology. I felt it best that I gain further understanding of what has and is taking place and what new cultures are springing forth from this source (online identity, activism, photography, 2nd Life). As an observer of art and technology, I find their merger fascinating for example the short film project shown during our first session "Elephant's Dream," is truely marvelous, not only is it a strong and captivating art piece, but the technology that has brought this piece to life, along with the idea that this work was mastered as an on-going collabative effort (globally!)to say the least, is "pretty amazing". What I also find p/a is Mashed/Remixed Art. Now, by no means am I a technical junkie; however, I have hopes this class will provide me with greater awarness of what's current in New Media, what's next on its' horizon and the personal confidence to explore, be unafraid, learn and understand this mediums language, and practice using this new technology. Ohh, and by the way, my tag: "SoftSeduction" comes from the philosophy of the art of sedcution and how we gently pursuade folks into our sphere of thought.

Peace,

Hello all,

This is Kaz. I don't know where to start...uhh.. I was a competitive figure skater until 15 and then switched my focus to playing the cello. I attended Juilliard for my freshman year, transferred to the music program at the New School the next year, and now here I am, majoring in cultural and media studies. I plan to finish my degree here but I definitely want to do something with my playing some time in the future.

I took this course to 1) explore some of the visual arts field that I never got a chance to and 2) to familiarize myself with the capabilities of different and innovative media. Anything art always fascinates me and I am looking forward to our class.

..and a shout out to Rai for SIMILARITIES. Good call!

Hello
It's Lauren. So here's some stuff:
I am almost finished with my BFA in photography, I've been working towards my degree for the past four years and its finally coming to a close. I'm more of a multimedia artist, photo is too confining in a way, - I like making things. Recently I've been struck into thought by the rapid technology based advancements that the developed world is constantly adopting and testing. This class is going to be the perfect outlet for all thoughts have been wanting to brainstorm about the digitized world and in what ways technology is affecting the present generations' grasp of the world (ie. cyborg nation!) I'm a little bit of a conspiracy theorist when it comes to the machine.

I'm a Canadian that was rerouted to Zimbabwe by my crazy parents in 1992, then in 2000 we moved back to Canada. I suppose seeing that developing country when I was a growing up opened my eyes to all of the opportunity that technology allows.
I hope this class is going to really get down with some high level conversating, so lets get to it.
